Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is a type of surgery that is done with a very small incision with little trauma to the patient. Minimally invasive surgery involves less bleeding, less pain, less rehabilitation time and is performed under local anesthesia in our modern office facility. The most common foot problems that require surgery are:
- Ankle pain
- Heel spurs
- Flat feet
- Tarsal tunnel
At Advanced Footcare IL you can be sure you are getting a skilled, experienced podiatrist who genuinely cares about finding the best treatment for your foot or ankle problems. Each member of our staff is sincere, caring and devoted to making sure that you get healthy as quickly as possible.
If you live in the Greater Chicago Area and have been looking for a qualified and caring foot surgeon, then you have found the right place. At Advanced Footcare IL we believe your feet should not hurt and neither should the treatment you receive.
If you are looking for a minimally invasive procedure, Hyprocure® is a great choice for correction of flat feet by minimally invasive methods. In order to decrease the abnormal, excessive motion a small incision is made in the foot or ankle that pushes a titanium stent in the natural space between the ankle bone and heel bone to prevent the ankle bone from rolling in. Throughout the whole procedure there is no screwing or drilling involved. Patients who underwent this procedure can go back to their regular activities in a very short time.
Orthotics are lightweight, flexible devices that help to correct an irregular or abnormal walking pattern caused by the inability of the foot to bear weight properly. When your foot is having this issue it can lead to bone, tendon and soft tissue problems, as well as bunions and hammertoes. Custom fit orthotics come in many shapes, sizes and materials but fall into three main categories: rigid orthotics, semi rigid orthotics and soft orthotics. At Advanced Footcare IL, Dr. Anthony Spitz will choose the right device for the patients’ needs.
Ingrown toenails are caused by the growth of the toenail into the surrounding nail fold. Symptoms include pain and swelling at the site. Chronic, painful ingrown toenails can usually be treated, permanently, with a simple procedure that prevents the regrowth of the ingrown portion of the nail.
These infections may start out as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your toenail. As the nail fungus spreads deeper into your nail, your nail may discolor, thicken and develop crumbling edges, causing an unsightly and potentially painful problem. These infections should be treated as soon as possible. If left untreated, they can lead to dangerous blood infections.

Heel pain is most often caused by overuse, instead of an injury. Heel pain as a result of overuse can be due to many things, including wearing shoes with poor support, running too often, especially on hard surfaces, sudden turning of your heel, or landing too hard or awkwardly on your heel. Connective tissue that runs from the toes to the heel bone causes heel pain, also known as heel spur syndrome. There are many types of treatment for heel pain, depending on the severity of your pain, including anti-inflammatory medications, ice packs, stretching exercises, orthotic devices, and/or physical therapy.
Plantar fasciitis involves a localized swelling, irritation, and/or bursitis of the thickened fibrous bands supporting the bottom of one’s foot. These tendon like bands run length wise from underneath the heel and fan out into the metatarsal heads or fat pad area of the foot. In most cases, painful symptoms arise at or near the point at which the bands are attached to the heel. When a person stands, these fibrous bands stretch and elongate under the pressure and pull on the heel. Eventually, a heel spur or calcium deposit may actually form in response to this constant pulling. Many of the patients who have this condition seem to have a similar presentation. There is frequently pain upon rising out of bed in the morning. The first few steps are excruciating but reduce quickly in their intensity. Later in the day, the individual with plantar fasciitis will notice pain after sitting and then getting up again. The pain is mostly localized to the heel and arch areas with occasional radiation of discomfort up the back of the leg. Well-padded shoes are helpful but rarely rectify the condition.
If you have a wound on your lower leg or foot that is not healing, it is very important to seek medical attention. Dr. Spitz is experienced in treating many types of wounds that are caused by cuts, burns, trauma, infection, blisters, diabetic ulceration, etc. Wound care involves the proper cleaning, dressing and treatment of the affected area until the wound is completely healed.
Diabetic Foot Care
Diabetes is a disease that can cause serious problems with your feet in terms of circulation, balance, numbness, wounds and the ability to heal properly. It is extremely important for diabetics to have their feet examined several times a year by a doctor, to check for and treat any ulcerations or infections, and to prevent any further complications from occurring.
Bunions and Hammertoes
Bunions are misaligned big toe joints that can become swollen and tender, causing the first joint of the big toe to slant outward, and the second joint to angle toward the other toes. Hammertoe is a deformity of the second, third or fourth toes. In this condition, the toe is bent at the middle joint, resembling a hammer. Left untreated, hammertoes can become inflexible and require surgery. These are very common conditions. These can be surgically corrected. We can also treat these conditions on a temporary basis, giving our patients temporary relief. The patient has the final say on how we treat their condition. Our approach is to get you back on your feet as fast as possible.
Pediatric Foot Care
Since young feet are still growing, problems can develop quickly. It is important to catch any conditions before they continue into adulthood. Pay attention to the following as they might indicate possible foot problems your child is experiencing: a change in the wear on their shoes, discoloration of the skin or nails, bumps on the skin, a change in the general coordination and stamina of your child, falling and fatigue and/or if they become unwilling to participate in activities they normally enjoy.
Ankle/Foot Fractures and Sprains
If you are suffering from an ankle or foot fracture or sprain, time is of the essence. The best results are achieved when the fracture is tended to immediately. It is imperative that you contact our office as soon as possible so that emergency care can be provided. Dr. Spitz will evaluate the extent of your condition and administer the appropriate treatment.
The most common foot problems caused by sports-related activites are blisters, corns, calluses, athlete’s foot, achilles tendonitis, and heel pain. Preventive measures include using proper foot hygiene: keeping your feet dry, wearing clean socks, making sure your shoes fit properly and making sure you do not overstrain your legs, ankles, and feet. If you develop recurring and/or increasing aches and pains you should make an appointment as soon as possible to avoid causing permanent damage.
